--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Office Suites project began with a five-wheeled office chair used as a percussion instrument to record a lengthy improvisation: striking, squeezing, squeaking, dropping, banging, rolling, flicking and scratching, to produce a diverse and varied vocabulary of sounds. This material was then edited and mixed into five chair-chair duets, which were then sent to the next studio. Here, A Demon Sheen improvised with each duet using the stringed instruments listed below, and sometimes twice on the same track. As well as the response to audio, advantage was also taken of being able to observe the passing waveforms on the monitor screen.

Now, a digital vocoder program was brought into play. The chairs files were used to vocode (used as a verb) the stringed instruments, and this material, sped up 2.5 times, was added to the five tracks to make up the suite titled "Diversity in the Workplace" (tracks 1-5).

The second suite, "The Shape of Chairs" (tracks 7-11), again uses the chairs files to vocode, but this time the subjects are five harmonium tracks. These are mixed onto various field recordings, and titled accordingly. Any comparisons with new-age flutes playing over quietly babbling streams should be immediately expunged!

The track "Imminent Foreign Takeover (What Went Wrong?)" is a transition piece between the two suites. Eight tracks of chairs are panned across the audio-field, and are gradually overtaken by the high-pitched staccato interjections of a track made from a field recording that has undergone severe upward pitch-shifting in two different ways.

Ernie Althoff & A Demon Sheen Melbourne, Australia

Ernie Althoff is a musician, composer, instrument builder, visual artist, and sonic nomad, who has been active in the Australian experimental music community since 1978, so there's no point trying to stop him now.

A Demon Sheen is a reculsive troglodyte who uses his dank solitude to create new forms of avant-metal, experimental soundscapes, and other unpopular musical forms.
